Greetings everyone,
So here are my questions again?
Is a Moy base identical to a Mitchell base?
I need to put a Moy Boss base on a 150 mm bowl.
So far the only adapters, I have seen are either for use on dolly
or are not rock solid as the bottom part of the adapter is round,
therefore can slip considering the weight of the head and camera.
Surely there must be a flat Mitchell base plate or something the
like that fits a 150 mm bowl.
I also intend to use a three way levelling head but not in all the
circumstances, due to the height as when using a hi-hat.
I would like to know the existing options?
Appreciate your replies, thank you in advance.

I suggest you contact Joe Dunton in London who owns both Mitchell
and Moy.
Other contact info is here : http://www.joedunton.co.uk/
He can answer all your questions. He probably has what you need.

Yes.

Not the best idea.

That's why is not such a good idea.
You can try putting the head directly on the 150mm bowl. If you
get a long enough tie down screw it will work. You may need a thin
plywood donut or washer. It's been done in pinch when the wrong
legs were sent out. It's not the best fix. The only alternative
I know is to change the tripod's top plate from 150mm bowl to Mitchell.

I've never seen one. But I'm sure one can be easily fabricated from
existing adaptors.

After a second cup of coffee:
The other reason -- aside from slippage, which you know-- why there
are no readily available adaptors from Mitchell/Moy to 150mm bowl
is that in order to secure the adaptor plate to the Mitchell base
of the Moy Head, you would first have to put a bolt or screw in
the middle of the adaptor, then you would need to put another bolt
or screw into the first bolt or screw to attach the bowl adaptor
to the tripod.
Otherwise the adaptor would be slipping around while you tried to
put the head on the adaptor and tripod at the same time. I think
the simplest solution is to change the tops of the tripods to Mitchell.

Yes that is what I am actually looking for. Changing the tops. I
guess I was not fully awake either when I first wrote my query.
Several years ago, whilst on a shoot, we had one set of legs and
a hi-hat, all with a 150 mm bowl or Sachtler bowl.
We used Sachtler Head and an Arri geared head. However when using
the Arri geared head, we somehow had some adapter plate fitting
the 150 mm bowl to fix the three way levelling head (Mitchell base)
to the tripod and then the geared head on top of it. Now I am looking
for that little plate, but I can seem to find that from the few
catalogues I have.
Don't feel like adding another set of legs nor changing my existing
heads. Also I don't currently have the time to walk in a rental
place (not open on Sundays or public holidays, only day off I have
so far) to see for myself, the various possibilities.
Why I am asking here.

If you can't find an adaptor and if you don't need to use the ball
levelling function, then it should be a fairly straight forward
project to fabricate an adaptor. It could be a flat plate with a
recess for the Mitchell, and a slot for the key way.

Bingo, just found what I was looking for; a riser with and adapter
to fit the 150mm bowl, slippage free.
No need to have something fabricated.
Thanks for the hint.
